Food @ Nasi Dagang

Finally, I got my second nasi dagang after the first like two years ago...then after 3 days, I had my third nasi dagang!! Hooray~~~

I suddenly had a craving for nasi dagang in a very great morning. A Malay friend of mine, Dayah suggested me the stall near hostel. So I spontaneously asked her to have nasi dagang together.

The next morning, she came with 3 packets of nasi dagang. One for her and two for me.

Nasi dagang is a specialty food in East Coast. It is steamed glutinous rice cooked in coconut milk served with fish curry, acar and delicious gravy!!! It is a must-eat food when you come to East Coast!

Nasi dagang is packed in banana leaves in a triangle shape.

Tah-dah!! Without and with gulai ikan~

Nom nom nom nom and finished all 2 packets

After 3 days during the course seminar, I had my third nasi dagang while the others had tomyam fried beehoon. Why? Hehehe…I sneaked into the VIP zone and curi makan the nasi dagang!! XD

This one is nicer, real spicy and I love ACAR (pickle vegetable with vinegar)very much!!

Uhmmm......Can I have another packet or plate of nasi dagang right now? @_@

Food @ Keropok Lekor Production

I like Keropok Lekor and always wish I could have a great many lekor to eat!

Thanks to Food Processing laboratory, we produce our own food product weekly.

We had produced salted fish, smoked fish, tapai, ice cream, yellow noodles, jam and cordial, tau fu fah, soy milk, grass jelly, burger, sausage, fish fingers, and also keropok lekor.

I’m going to talk about how to make keropok lekor. If you want to know more about the background of keropok lekor, click here.

Get frozen fish flesh (otoshimi), salt, cornstarch, sagu flour, sugar, MSG, soda bicarbonate and shortening then mix all of them with bowl chopper.

Then roll the minced flesh into cylinder shape.

Boil the lekor with boiling water and cut into pieces. Then deep fry it until golden brown color.

 Tah-dah!!! Our final product

"very Crispy and have stronger fishy taste keropok lekor"

See those plastic bags…full with lekor. Eat till feel gross coz too much of keropok lekor in the day!!

I think, I will not eat any lekor for the coming months….T_T

Food @ Mongolia Steamboat, Kuala Terengganu

There’s one shop selling Mongolia steamboat in the town. It’s opposite the Buddhist Association KT...but this shop opposite the holy place is uhmm...kinda complicated~

But who cares, I’m here for food, not for others.

We had one set of steamboat with tomyam soup. Rm30 per set.

One set of steamboat ingredients…meat, seafood, fishball, crabstick, egg, vegetables and ‘dungfen’

First, burn and melt the lards and pour in the soup.
(Spot the plate, shining clean)

Then put in everything you want to eat. We grilled the meat and seafood.

Introducing my friends…the man is stupidmonk and the lady is cien.

The steamboat is heated by charcoal, not gas… everything cooked so fast and the soup also run low very fast. Eat fast!!!

The tomyam is mind-blowing!!! Spicy hot and sour but nice~ *thumbs up*

The shining plate started to stained black by burnt meat and burnt soup ~

In the end, all food with the soup went into stomach. Yum yum! I ate 2 bowls of rice that day~ yay! And the plate is wholly black.

Then wuliao people started to play with cracked eggshells and the left ingredients like lards and sauces.

(See the flaming fire from burning charcoal!!)

Hmmm, when the weather is cold, the best thing to do is having steamboat at a round table. Throw all the food in a hot boiling soup then slurppppp….whoa!! warm~ but when the weather is hot, having steamboat until whole wet with sweat also not bad also wut…speed up metabolism and detox by sweating!!! hahahahaha :)

Food @ Yes Corner & MingStar Sushi Restaurant, Kuala Terengganu

There are two places to have Japanese food in Kuala Terengganu.

Both them are just located in the opposite of each other.

One is the sushi restaurant of Ming Star Hotel, while another one is Yes Corner.

They sell selections of sushi, maki, udon, don etc. Local masakan panas and Western food like nasi goreng kampong and chicken chop also available!

Wait, wth.... What’s the actual food concept of the shops huh?

Yes Corner has a Japanese style interior design. Balloonfish with chef cap is their logo fish!

(sorry for the blur photo, I cropped and zoomed)

Here’s the sushi and whatever maki or temaki…I don’t know their names larr.

These are the whatever Don Don Don (rice) made up by unagi, chicken, soft shell crab, prawn tempura…I don’t know their names also.
 The Udon and my food.

OH-Am-Gee...I'm hungry now!~

See the dark one, look like hokkien-char-dai-lok-mee with salmon right?

Wahahaha! No, it’s udon! =P

I remember last time I ate some kind of Don which is rice with fried chicken. It was very dry. This time I ‘seng-mok’ already, want something softer and moisture. So I ordered the Don with fried chicken and curry sauce.

wth......I was disappointed again~ The curry is fake one! Taste and smell like instant noodle curry powder!! ishhh...

I personally prefer MingStar Sushi. Don’t know why, I just prefer it!

These are Bento and whatever sushi or temaki or maki of Ming Star. Yummmm~ Nom nom nom nom nom

Arrhhh…I’m hungry now! Wanna get some food to feed my stomach~

If sushi king is here, I guess, I will visit every weekend …but I’ll be broke with empty pockets! Fuuuhhh, luckily! Bye!

Food @ Keropok Lekor

Short notes:
Thanks to Food and Culture. Lecturer assigned us to write a 2 pages essay about local traditional foods with their history background and cultural value. I got the title of ‘Keropok Lekor’, the most common snack for everyone in Terengganu.

I know you may feel weird why I write a post like this. Hehe…because I wanna try out something. I have a kinda-big-but-lame-wish! *shhh…not gonna tell you what is it*

Below is the article I wrote:-

One of the popular traditional snacks in the East Coast of Peninsular Malaysia is keropok lekor. Keropok lekor or sausage-like snack has long existed in Malaysia and can be found everywhere in Malaysia primarily in Terengganu (Omar et al., 2011). It is grayish in color and in tube-shaped (Tourism Terengganu, 2007). It is the famous traditional snack in Terengganu and also Kelantan. Keropok lekor does not have any history. It symbolizes Malay culture as the major resident in Terengganu and Kelantan are Malay. It has become a must-buy delicacy for the tourist, especially for Malay ethnic. It has been sold in commercial retail shops as well as on the street. Consumers usually can purchase keropok lekor from local hawker stalls and night markets. Losong is one of the famous places to buy keropok lekor (Tourism Terengganu, 2007). There is frozen keropok lekor sold in the market too.

The basic ingredients used to produce keropok lekor are fish, sago flour, salt and icy cold water (Tourism Terengganu, 2007). Ground fish is mixed with sago flour and salt as flavoring ingredients. Fish used to make the keropok usually are ikan selayang, ikan parang, ikan kembong and ikan kerisi. To make keropok lekor, first clean the fish thoroughly. Then scrape off the meat and mince the meat finely. Add salt, sago flour and icy cold water to mix into the dough. Icy cold water is mixed little by little until the dough becomes soft. Roll the dough into cylindrical shape like sausage. Traditionally, keropok lekor is precooked by boiling in water for a few minutes (Omar et al., 2011). The cooked dough will be then be cut into smaller tube-shaped for deep frying. Another option to take keropok lekor is by steaming.

There are two ways to eat keropok lekor, which are deep fried or steamed. Fried keropok lekor is fried until crispy gold while steamed keropok lekor gives a fishier flavor. Keropok lekor is nice to be eaten hot dipped with chili sauce. Another kind of keropok is keropok keping. They are the thinner version of keropok lekor. They are made up or larger tube-shaped keropok being sliced into very thin slices and taken as crackers (Tourism Terengganu, 2007).

Keropok lekor is tasty and crunchy. It can be chewy too. It has slightly fishy taste and best eaten while hot. It is a very popular snack and should be introduced to other states in Malaysia and even oversea to increase its popularity to become a good symbol of Malay culture.

(The conclusion was kinda lame and short...yes I know...T_T)I like Keropok lekor since high school in Teluk Intan, Perak. It’s my must-eat snack in school, and always get scolded and warned by my choir instructor for eating so much of fried keropok lekor will spoil my voice later. Hehee ;P

So, I should be glad to study in Terengganu right? because I can eat as much as keropok lekor I want to! Yay!!

PS: Cite my words please if you use this as reference! Thanks a lot~

Food @ Noodle Station, Kuala Terengganu

Recently always went out to cari makan.

As concequences, I gained my weight back~ T_T

I decided to comeback with food posts!

High 5 *piak*… it’s time to drool your saliva~

In a month, I went to Noodle Station for twice. Once for V Day, and once for B Day

In case you don’t understand, V Day = Valentine’s DayB Day = Birth Day

Noodle Station is located behind KFC opposite the bus terminal Kuala Terengganu.

Namely ‘Noodle Station’, of course they sell variety of noodles.

The main noodle is springy egg noodle (wantan mee). They sell rice and western food also.

Friends say the food is delicious, but for me…uhmmm…ok, just normal.
Price is reasonable, but service is not really good.
Perhaps I expect too much, thus, I was disappointed once again~

I didn’t have much of photos but you can go for further details at here.
(Just click it)

This is the I Love You Lemonade I had for V Day.

It’s actually carbonated drink mix with blue coloring and passion fruit juice.

I Love You Lemonade, sorry I don’t Love You :(

Curry springy noodle with chicken dumplings (fried wantan), fishcake and fishball.

me and my food

For friend’s B day celebration, I don’t wanna have curry anymore. So I ordered springy noodle with smoked black pepper drumstick. Below is the photo from noodle station, the real appearance almost the same. Taste so-so, a little too dry, but the black pepper chicken tastes good.

And these are those my friends had tried....

Hmmm, there are Noodle Station outlets in different states like Selangor, KL, Kelantan, Penang and also Pahang.

All the people, do recommend me the best food of Noodle Station! If you haven’t tried it, just go for it! Then tell me the real delicious item of Noodle Station! =P

The Power of Nutrition: Better Health Tomorrow

When I was a primary school student, I wanted to be a doctor.
When I was a high school student, I wanted to be a pharmacist.
When I was waiting for the result, I wanted to be either a nutritionist or a dietician.

All of the ‘ambitions’ are not my ‘ambition’
I actually want to enter the field of mass-communication, I will be a journalist or doing some media jobs.

Well, now I’m an undergraduate Food Science student, major in food service and nutrition. But I still confused about my future career.

The best career is to get married to a successful rich man and my daily job is to sit at home goyang kaki or go out for shopping-spree and travelling.

Yes! My biggest ambition~

Ok. Come back~

Last weekend, we organized a Community Nutrition Intervention Programme as a project for the subject of Community Nutrition.

Date: 5 Mac 2011
Venue: New Café, Hostel University Malaysia Terengganu
Target subjects: 50-60
Theme: The Power of Nutrition: Better Health Tomorrow

It’s a great experience for us as this is the first time we apply all the knowledge we had learnt in these years.

The first counter is Registration and Dietary Record Questionnaire.

Next, check your blood pressure! Too high or too low blood pressure is not good for health!

Then go to the anthropometry counter to measure height, weight, waist and hip. BMI and WHR will be calculated to determine weight status.

Please ‘donate’ some drops of blood for blood glucose level test.

Don’t hesitate to pee into the bottle and go for urine test. Luckily I’m not the one to handle this, just feel gross to see 60 bottles of urine! Haha!

After all the tests, come for consultation.

We analyze your tests’ results, tell you what should you do, and give you advices. Talk till throat dry and cough like wth. And people really ask some weird questions which make me said “Errr…let me think first”…but luckily still can help. To trust me or not, to follow my advices or not, up to you!

Most of the students are in normal BMI but underfat. Many have less than 20% body fat. For the underweight people are even worst! Some only have 2-3% of fat in their body. Wow!!! I wonder what is below their skin and how could they survive if starving for days~ where’s the fat!??

As for myself, I’m chubby, fleshy, and fat right?! But I’m in the middle of normal BMI and body fat is at the borderline of underfat and healthy range ~ wahahaha XD

So I conclude my status like this:

HEALTHY! But FAT with WATER RETENTION and EDEMA!

Yes! This must be the reason why I looked so fat~ hohoho

Lastly, we have education zones for you!

We have Malaysia Food Pyramid, food portion suggestions, posters about healthy eating behavior, healthy body weight management, desirable lipid profile and blood pressure management.

Community Nutrition Intervention Programme is a success!!!! but I think I'm still very shallow in nutrition X(

Dr. praised our efforts and treat us chocolate cakes~

*uhmmm...chocolate cakes? High calories worrr...don't eat, don't eat! or else gain weight later*

*Nevermind, I'm a kind person! I am willing to sacrifice myself to eat for all of you laaa*
So, 2 went into my stomach! XD *satisfied*

Anyway, let’s move for health!! Yay =P

PS: Some photos are taken by H.M.Leong =P *clap hands*
